Lib Dems demand Calne sorting depot stays open5.17.00pm GMT Wed 25th Mar 2009 A proposed review that threatens Calne's Post Office sorting depot's future has been slammed by North Wiltshire Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate Mike Evemy. Post Office bosses are considering closing the Calne High Street site and running the operation from Chippenham. It is believed that this measure, which includes relocating around 40 jobs, will only save a few thousand pounds. This potential blow follows the devastating closure of Post Offices in communities across North Wiltshire in the last 12 months and the announcement the organisation is likely to be part privatised by the Labour Government. Mike Evemy says: "The Post Office is about serving local people and communities. This review is another blow to Calne and to the many people who rely on the Post Office." "The Tories, who run Wiltshire, stood by and let our Post Offices close in the last year, when other county councils stepped in to protect these vital services." "Now the Councils must act or these jobs could move to Chippenham. This means Calne residents would have to go to Chippenham to collect their parcels, costing them time and money. All to save a bit of cash for the soon to be privatised Post Office. The Post Office should abandon this proposal."
